Around midnight the rhythm changes again. The shoppers thin out and the traders begin selling to each other — dinner, airtime, gossip. A man who spent six hours selling shoes buys a plate of chips mayai from the woman beside him, and for a moment the market consumes itself, gently, like a tide turning.

By two in the morning only the tea sellers remain, serving the security guards and the taxi drivers and the traders too tired to go home. And by six, the wholesale men return, rolling up their shutters, stepping over the last of the night's cardboard, entirely unaware — or pretending to be — that their market never actually closed.
